Inspired by a recent article I’ve read listing the “World’s Best Places to Live,” here’s the first in a new series on the reported best cities to live in around the world.  Each post will detail some information on each city, and we’ll count backwards from ten to see which cities are your favourites!

A study run by Mercer annually, the cities are judged on a handful of different criteria including infrastructure, political stability, health care and more. Though the study was initially conceived to assist companies in sending expatriated workers overseas, I feel it’s of interest to frequent travellers and long-term expats like myself who may be looking for the next place to travel and live!

Number ten on the list and our first city feature is Sydney, Australia. Known by many as the “Harbour City,” Sydney is Australia’s only city in the top ten. Famous for being extremely multicultural and a home to many immigrants of different nationalities, Sydney’s diversity is a huge plus for those looking for a mix of cultures and wide choices in cuisine.

Right on the coastline and a city with many huge parks, this emphasis on the outdoors that is inherent in Sydney is one of the reasons that the city is considered to be so liveable.  With so many days of sunshine in a year and a warm climate, Sydneysiders can’t help but enjoy being outside and there are plenty of things to do and see that cater to this.

The famous Bondi Beach is a part of Sydney and surfing is all the rage in this area.  Add to this the low unemployment rate and plenty of international companies in the city, and you’ve got the perfect formula for a great place to visit and even better place to live.

One of the few cities on the top ten list that has such beautiful beaches and a year-round temperate climate, I’m definitely tempted by Sydney as somewhere I could see myself living in the future, and it’s only number ten on our list!  I can’t wait to learn more about the other cities in the weeks to come.

For the truly dedicated, return flights from London to Sydney this August are currently only £881.  Take your time exploring the city and see if you could live there!
