I’m off on an adventure to Canterbury this weekend. Though it’s only an hour by train from London, I found myself thinking whilst packing – no matter the length of a trip, there are some travel essentials that I can’t live without. I thought I’d share these with you and see if you had some things that are a “must-pack” for you on all of your trips.  Here’s my list of my Top 5 Travel Essentials in no particular order.  What’s in your suitcase?

1. Fully stocked iPod and headphones

This number one entry is essential for me almost every single day.  A huge music fan and podcast enthusiast, I don’t really go anywhere without my iPod fully stocked, charged and ready for travel.  The iPod is especially handy as well for when I’m travelling on my own.  Nothing keeps me better company than my music whilst walking through a new city and it’s also handy for deterring obnoxious seat mates on the plane or train which I have to admit I’ve done more than once!  This rule works for any type of MP3 or music player, I just happen to have an iPod.  A good old-fashioned Discman will work too!

2. My iPhone

No, this isn’t me, but it might as well be!  I find my iPhone to be one of the most essential travel tools that I have.  Not only can I locate myself on a map and find where I’m going, but it’s easy to convert currency, update social media networks, find restaurant reviews and more, all whilst on the go!  Again, any smart phone will do but since I’ve got an iPhone, that’s why I mention it here. (are you sensing a theme?)

3. Camera

I’ve got a tiny red point and shoot camera that’s been my travelling companion for a while now.  I love nothing more than taking shots of interesting things on my travels and then reliving the memories later and sharing my pictures with family and friends.  It’s a great way to document your trip and photographs make the perfect souvenirs.  Who needs another fridge magnet or shot glass when you’ve got that perfect shot of yourself in front of a gorgeous vista or monument?  Of course there are many more serious photographers out there who might want to bring something along a bit more sophisticated than my little camera, but regardless the type of camera, bring one along on your next journey!

4. Sunglasses

This may sound silly, but I never travel without a pair of sunglasses.  A true California girl at heart, I feel most at home in the sunshine and with sunglasses squared snugly on my face.  Perhaps it something that comes along with the California birth certificate, or maybe I just like them more than others, but I’ve always got a pair in my travel bag, even in winter.  Call it wishful thinking or just preparedness, but you never know when that bright sun might shine!

5. Books!!!

A self-described book nerd, I never ever travel anywhere without a book (or two, or three!!!).  Reading is my favourite way to pass the time in long train, plane or car rides and I’ve always got a book or two that I’m reading.  Take a look at the photo above for some of the books that I took with me to Hungary in 2009.  I think I only brought half of those, what with baggage weight restrictions and all.  I’ve got eclectic tastes as you can see from the shot above, and my rule generally is “if it’s good, I’ll read it!” though I’ve been a bit heavy with the cheesy chick lit and tales of expats in different cities over the past year or so.

So now, it’s your turn!  What are your Top 5 Travel Essentials?  What must you always have with you on a trip?  I can’t wait to hear!

    Thanks for your comment Anil!

I'm honestly considering getting a netbook or an iPad-type device since my laptop sometimes feels to heavy for me to bring along with me. Do you have a light laptop option?

  • I don't use an ultra-light myself but have heard great things about the Asus EEE line and did quite a bit of product testing and research on the Dell Mini 10. I'd say you can't go wrong with either option ~$300. I wouldn't spend the money on an iPad if you want a laptop replacement.
  • I want to write a post like this!
