When thinking of Bangkok, and Thailand in general, immediately ancient palaces, bustling street scenes and gorgeous beaches come to mind. Bangkok is high on my list of destinations in 2010 and is our feature for today’s Travel Monday segment.

A city that was once at the centre of European plans to colonise the area, Bangkok today is a dynamic hotbed of culture, history and independence. It has also become a city that is popular with worldwide travelers as a home base for exploring Asia and relatively inexpensive city to visit. In fact, Bangkok is the third most-visited city in the world, behind tourism centres Paris and London.

Water taxis zip up and down the Chao Phraya River that bisects this busy city. A network of canals also feed off the river and into the city, though many of them have since been paved over and converted into roads. The city also boasts a metro system that will aid in exploring all that Bangkok has to offer.

Bangkok’s Grand Palace is a breathtaking monument that is one of the most visited in the city. Serving as the main residence of Thai kings from the 18th century until recently, the Grand Palace has been continually expanded and is an ornate and interesting spot to visit on your trip to Bangkok. A stop at the Grand Palace, along with tours of the many gorgeous ancient temples that surround the Bangkok area will give a good cursory idea of some of the history of the region.

Of course no visit to Bangkok would be complete without a stroll through one of the many outdoor markets for some bargain shopping and sampling of the world-famous Bangkok street food. From traditional dishes such as Pad Thai to the more exotic fried insects, Thai street food is known around the world as an incredible value and for its delicious variety.
