A stunning and easily accessible city nestled in the centre of the Czech Republic, Prague is the focus of our Travel Monday post this week.

Known as “Praha” to locals, Prague is a city brimming with history and things to see and do.  In fact, the entire historic centre of the city has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1992.  The list of memorable sights in the city is long, but here are a few ideas of things to do on your first visit to the city.

According to the Guiness Book for World Records, the Prague Castle is the largest existing ancient castle in the world.  With its earliest structures dating back to the 9th century, the Castle sits majestically atop a hill and offers an amazing view over the Vltava River and Charles Bridge.  As it’s so large, the castle has so many different interesting parts to visit, but the four churches and gardens surrounding the castle are perhaps the most beautiful.  The castle is open to tourists year-round and is a lovely way to start any visit to Prague.

Old Town (Staré Město) is the oldest part of Prague and has been a central meeting place for residents since the 9th century.  The Týn Cathedral is likely the first thing that you will spot upon entering the square.  Soaring above the surrounding buildings, the cathedral was constructed in a typcial Gothic style in the 14th century and continues to be Prague’s main church.  Another notable thing to see in the Old Town Square is Prague’s Astronomical Clock.  This gorgeous old clock is still functional since being built around 1490.  Showing the time, date, zodiac sign, position of the sun and moon and more, this ornate piece is definitely worth a visit.  Stop by on the hour to see the most activity on the clock, with statues of all twelve apostles appearing above the clock, as well as a skeleton figure representing “Death” who marks the hour.

Of course, no visit to Prague would be complete without sampling the delicious food and beer that can be found throughout the city.  Check out Mark’s previous post about some of the amazing dishes he enjoyed in Prague for some inspiration.  With breweries in the Czech Republic that have been in existence since the 1100’s, the Czechs are said to be the inventors of the pilsner.  Enjoy one of the many beers on offer with a mouthwatering meaty dish such as goulash for the complete Prague experience.

Getting there is easy with plenty of daily flights – return flights from London to Prague start at around £45.  Hezký výlet!
