We’re continuing our series on the Natural Wonders of the World today with a spotlight on the Great Barrier Reef.  One of the few natural landmarks visible from outer space, the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest structure made by living organisms.

With an enormous diversity of marine life, the Great Barrier Reef is a must-see for anyone interested in discovering new species and appreciating many vulnerable and endangered species.  Due to environmental threats such as climate change and pollution, the reef is in danger along with many of its species.  With over 1,500 species of fish in the reef alone, it is essential that this (and all other Natural Wonders) be protected for years to come.  I know that I would be most excited to see the sea turtles that live near and around the reef – there are six different species!

This Natural Wonder of the World is the only one on the list where you can enjoy scubaing, snorkelling and discovering new marine life that’s unlike anywhere else in the world.  Tourism rates are high, especially during Australia’s winter.  A unique way to experience the reef is by hiring a “liveaboard” boat that will take you out to your diving excursions and often has overnight accommodations as well.  It’s a great way to be immersed in the beauty of the reef without having to return to shore right away.

Travel to Cairns from London from only £661 return to explore the reef and enjoy this wonder of the world.  Stay tuned, the next stop in our series is Rio de Janiero!
