The Middle East is an area that I have yet to really explore. Some of the most fascinating historical sites still remain in the region and there seem to be places to visit that are unlike anywhere else on earth. Some of our favourite bloggers have been to some amazing sites and today we’ll feature some of the best posts about the Middle East that we’ve read recently.
Enchanting Spots: Petra, Jordan – Velvet Escape
Perhaps made famous in broad public consciousness by the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Petra, Jordan is much more than just a backdrop or sound stage. This massive city was carved right into the stone of mountains in an ingenious fashion by the ancient Nabataeans in 100 BC, and this huge site is one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Keith of Velvet Escape has written a great post about his visit to Petra and the things to see there….I’d love to go!

Conservation of the Old Walled City of Sana’a – T. Luke Young
The Old City of Sana’a in Yemen has been inhabited continuously for more than 2,500 years and contains some of the most amazing buildings that have been preserved for many hundreds of years. Visit to take in the ancient architecture or to Suq-al-Milh traditional salt market where you can find all kinds of things to buy from salt to silver!

The Seven Wonders of Egypt – Everything Everywhere
Gary Arndt is a world traveller who has been criss-crossing the globe since 2007. He’s made a list of the seven “wonders of Egypt” that includes many ideas of things to see when visiting Egypt. Of course he’s included the Great Pyramids and Sphinx which are often the first things that spring to mind when thinking of visiting Egypt. He’s also included other ideas that may not be as well-known but look equally as interesting.
