Travel Monday this week takes us to Germany for a spotlight on Berlin. Germany’s capital city is a bustling centre where history comes alive and there is a little bit of something for everyone.
Famous perhaps for what was once a bitter division that lasted through the Cold War, in Berlin there is much to see and explore. Pay homage to the city’s history with a visit to the remaining sections of the Berlin Wall. The East Side Gallery is a 1.3km long section of the Berlin Wall that still stands today as a memorial to freedom. Walk along the edge of the wall to see how massive and imposing it really is and imagine how life must have been back before 1989 and the fall of the wall.

For more Berlin history, head over to the other side of town to visit the Brandenburg Gate which is the only remaining gate through which one previously entered the city and is one of the few structures that survived World War II. Made famous through the years as a main symbol of Berlin and Germany, the Brandenbug Gate is quickly recognisable and is a must-see.

If world history is more your interest, no stay in Berlin is complete without a visit to the Pergamon Museum that can be found in the middle of Berlin’s Museum Island. The Pergamon is one of the most breathtaking museums that I have visited and houses original-sized reconstructed historical building and famous structures. Be transported back to ancient Greece and Babylon as you walk past the original Pergamon Altar and through the immense Ishtar Gate. This is a museum unlike any in the world and definitely something to put at the top of your list on your trip to Berlin.

As a light, fun alternative, take a stroll through the Berlin Zoo, one of the most popular zoos worldwide. With one of the best primate exhibits I’ve ever seen, along with the young polar bear Knut who gained international attention back in 2006-2007, it’s easy to see why the Berlin Zoo is internationally acclaimed.
