One of my favorite things to discover whilst travelling is the different types of street food that is standard to the area. As an American, I’ve become used to the typical hot dog carts of New York City and the taco trucks of my native Los Angeles. However, there is quite an array of street food to be sampled around the world. Check out some of the varieties we’ve found on our travels, along with some that we’d like to try on future trips. What street foods have you sampled?

Beijing, China food stand – I saw these on my trip to China back in 2001 and was fascinated by the different types of food to be had on skewers. The range was incredible – from fish, chicken to more exotic options like cocoons (no kidding!) and large insects. Our tour guide insisted that the cocoon skewers were his favourites and urged us to try them. I wasn’t brave enough to sample them but a friend of mine was, and she said they weren’t half bad.

Of course in bouncing back to Europe, we can still find street food – some of the best I’ve had has been in Prague, where sausage stands and street food abounds! My favourite thing was the smazeny syr which is basically a fried cheese sandwich slathered in herbed mayo. It’s definitely not a treat for everyday but is delicious in the cold on the way home from the pub and a night of enjoying the inexpensive yet delicious Czech beers.

In India, street food appears to take a more healthy turn with different fruits and vegetables cooked up right before your eyes!
