In the mood for some sunshine? Barcelona is the place to go for a quick weekend away and is the perfect spot for travelers looking for relaxation, delicious cuisine and amazing culture.
Located on the Mediterranean coast, Barcelona is unique in Spain as it’s a part of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia. About 74% of Barcelona’s population speaks the musical Catalan language native to the region. Even those with untrained ears can hear the difference between Spanish and Catalan, but never fear – most of the population also speaks and understands conversational English so travelers can explore the city without worry.
When visiting the city, don’t miss a trip to Park Guell which is perhaps one of the most beautiful and unique parks that I have visited in Europe. Roam around the gothic Gaudi sculptures and enjoy one of the most complete and picturesque views available in the city with the expanse of the Mediterranean sea laid out before your eyes. Be sure to stop by Gaudi’s other masterpieces, including the unfinished Sagrada Familia church that has been under construction since the late 1800’s! Or, stroll on the boardwalk and enjoy the beaches that offer a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the main attractions.
A trip to Barcelona wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local favorite – tapas and sangria! The city has hundreds of tiny tapas restaurants that serve up these traditional tiny dishes, allowing the opportunity to sample many different varieties and tastes. Sangria, made of infused red wine, sliced fruit, sugar and a dash of brandy, is the perfect accompaniment to your tapas meal and is best enjoyed when sipped in the sun.
Take a trip to Barcelona in early November – fares are starting under £30 but they’re going quickly!
